Job Title: Translator/Interpreter/Office Support Schedule: 20 hrs/week
Job Type: Part-Time FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Principal Pay: $21/hour, starting

Ingenium Schools currently operates several charter schools, serving students throughout Los Angeles.

The Translator/Interpreter will work at the school campus supporting Spanish to English and English to Spanish translation and interpretation as well as supporting in the office. The Translator/Interpreter interacts with a variety of stakeholders, both internal and external, and is a member of the school-site team.

An ideal candidate will be knowledgeable of charter schools, the student population Ingenium serves, and laws, regulations and policies surrounding student privacy and generally accepted practices for translation/interpretation. This person must be aware of and perform specific specialized duties as required by the position, state and federal guidelines, as well as network policies.

Key Contribution

Supports and implements the school site with accurate translation/interpretation for parents and students in order to ensure Ingenium students, families, and staff understand one another and to ensure that students and parents have access to the knowledge and information they need to support and improve student learning.


Demonstrates knowledge of and supports Ingenium Schools’ mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and code of conduct
Strives to implement, by instruction and action, Ingenium Schools’ philosophy of education and goals/objectives in connection with Ingenium’s Signature Practices
Continuously maintains and improves professional competence
Attends mandatory trainings, professional meetings, and educational conferences, as required

Initiates and exercises good judgment and positive working relationships with the community, students, staff and with public and private agencies


Prepares written translations of a variety of documents used at school sites and the district office including, but not limited to, individualized educational plans, legal materials, assessments, bulletins, correspondence, meeting minutes and forms
Produces verbatim translations of formal and informal meetings using idiomatic expressions when necessary and appropriate to ensure accurate and effective message content and intent delivery
Provide simultaneous interpretations during formal presentations at schools and network meeting sites using interpretation equipment, as appropriate
Interprets from English to Spanish and from Spanish to English in order to assist network and school personnel in communicating with non-English speaking students, families and community members
Uses, distributes and maintains headsets and microphones used during oral interpretation assignments
Uses modern office equipment in the preparation of translations
Provides typed translations of legal documents (i.e. Individual Educational Plans, Local Control Accountability Plans), student data and related information, correspondence, communications and informative materials from English to Spanish and Spanish to English
Performs responsible clerical duties including, but not limited to: manipulating and maintaining computer data base information systems, and maintaining filing systems, record keeping, maintaining student records, and composing routine correspondence
Attends meetings during regular working hours as required by the Network and Schools and interprets from English to Spanish and Spanish to English
Arranges meetings, notifies participants, prepares materials and takes minutes as directed
Establishes positive communication with families to assist families with registration, eligibility/ identification, contact with community agencies and other issues related to school programs
Answers incoming phone calls and transfers calls or takes messages as appropriate
Greets, informs and directs visitors, staff and students, in person or over the telephone with courtesy and diplomacy; ascertains nature of business and provides standard information related to area of assignment
Interprets for staff, parents, and students at meetings, district-wide, as assigned by the Administrator or designee
Travels to schools and offices, as assigned
Performs other job-related duties as required

Collaborate with site-based and network leaders to evaluate proposed solutions to address priorities

Establishes and maintains professional and cooperative working relationships with all stakeholders: authorizers, parents, students, staff, neighbors, and partners

B.A./B.S. degree from an accredited college or university, preferred
At least two years experience and/or training in educational translation/interpretation, preferred
Experience working under time pressure and maintaining a positive work environment


Knowledge of urban children and their families, especially those from the dominant cultural groups represented in the school’s student population
Knowledge of federal and state laws and procedures, codes, regulations and requirements pertaining to areas of assigned responsibility
Knowledge of principles, practices, methods and strategies applicable to translation and interpretation
Knowledge of FERPA and other privacy laws
Correct oral and written usage of English and Spanish.
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
Oral and written communication skills.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Operation of desktop computer software and peripherals.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with all partners
