Summary:
Provides oral and written translations from the English language to and from a designated foreign language and from and to the English language. Prepares and distributes written translations for publications, forms, announcements, and instructions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Translates spoken language from one language into another with appropriate use of idioms. Provides consecutive or simultaneous translation between languages.
Translates documents and other material, including technical subject matters and policies, following established rules pertaining to factors, such as word meanings, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and mechanics. Prepares and translates abstracts and summaries for materials.
Reviews and edits translations made by others for accuracy, context, readability, and style. Proofreads documents and forms.
Serves as a liaison between staff, students, parents and oversight agencies to ensure that translations and documents are properly translated. Verifies and clarifies information to be translated.
Consults with teachers, instructional assistants, resource staff, other school personnel and parents concerning useful programs and materials to meet student needs. Alerts teachers to any special problems or information concerning students in assigned programs.
Assists teachers, specialists and parents with translations that support development and evaluation individual and group educational goals and objectives. Assists school sites with the implementation of student individualized education plans.
Attends, provides simultaneous translation, and may be required to maintain records of proceedings for school board, public and confidential hearings and other meetings.
May assist with the preparation of reports by gathering and summarizing information such as demographics and language.
Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Knowledge and Skills:
The position requires well-developed skills in spelling, punctuation, syntax, grammar, and pronunciation of formal English and a designated language. Requires a working knowledge of regional differences in word usage and idioms in English and the designated foreign language as well as cultural and attitudinal differences, customs, and mores. Requires working knowledge of technical and legal-oriented vocabulary. Requires a working knowledge of child development and learning concepts, theories, principles, and techniques. Requires a working knowledge of education and teaching methods. Requires considerable human relation skills to interact in both formal and informal settings with a wide variety of contacts.
Abilities:
Requires the ability to interpret/translate to and from English and a designated foreign language without altering the original meaning and intent. Requires the ability to express meaning between languages that is structurally, grammatically, and idiomatically correct. Requires the ability to comprehend and translate vernacular expressions of varying disciplines and interpret nuances. Requires the ability to learn and use personal computers to prepare written documents and access databases used in education. Requires the ability to use electronic equipment to broadcast voice to a large audience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to provide language interpretation and translation for students, staff, and families in various environments as scheduled.
Knowledge and ability to perform oral interpretation during meetings, such as IEP meetings, hearings, and other times as assigned.
Knowledge and ability to perform written translation of IEPs, assessment reports, forms, communications, discipline reports, report cards, and related documents.
Ability to assist parents and staff by interpreting the meaning of words and phrases.
Ability to follow NAETISL interpreter/translator code of ethics, including standards for confidentiality of information.
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED.
The position typically requires an Associate’s Degree and a high level of language proficiency and prior experience translating in a multicultural environment.
Experience and certifications may substitute for some higher education.
Licenses and Certificates:
Bilinugual Tier I and Tier II Certification
Typing Certificate (40+ WPM)
District Clerical Screening Test Certificate

Salary and Terms of Service:
Salary range (C6) $22.84 – $27.70 per hour, eight (8) steps, eight (8) hours per day and five (5) days per week (M-F). Holidays, sick leave and vacation benefits. Prepaid family dental, medical, and vision insurance, prepaid life insurance plan for employee only
