DESCRIPTION
Under supervision, incumbent will work in a radiology research lab studying contrast media. The incumbent will independently perform a wide variety of imaging procedures including CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine (SPECT, PET, gamma) and optical imaging experiments. The incumbent will also manage the day-to-day operations of the lab, schedule shared resource equipment, and assist in the design of experimental protocols for improving experimental procedures appropriate to the goals of the project. Additionally, the incumbent will evaluate scientific literature to optimize design of experiments and research strategies, and maintain stocks of cell lines for use in imaging experiments. Compile and edit manuscripts and grant applications, and instruct postdoctoral scholars, graduate students and other staff members in all aspects of the research program including the use of equipment and policy in the imaging/radiological laboratories.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Theoretical knowledge in biology, biomedical sciences or a related field generally acquired through a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of anatomy is strongly preferred.
Proven experience and knowledge in animal care, handling, and restraining in dogs, pigs, rabbits, rats, mice, etc.
Experience to administer drugs and collect blood and tissue. Skill in observing animals for health and anesthesia. Familiarity of electronic equipment for physiologic recording. Proven skill in surgical preparation. Experience in venipuncture.
Knowledge of sterile techniques for cell culture. General analytical chemistry skill (mixing chemicals and reagents, balancing equations, etc.) Use of basic laboratory equipment (pH meters, microscopes, balances, pipettes, centrifuges, etc).
Excellent written skills and knowledge of English language, including grammar, usage, spelling, and punctuation. Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills. Skill to communicate clearly, effectively, tactfully, and patiently in person, on the telephone, and in writing to a diverse group of people in the academic and scientific communities. Ability to present a positive impression in person, on the telephone, and through written correspondence.
Proficient skill in use of PC and computer software. Ease with database, spreadsheets and word processing. Familiarity with UCSD systems preferred.
Ability to read, understand, and extract information from published medical, chemical, and biological literature to prepare background information for scientific papers, abstracts, and grant proposals.
Demonstrated ability to make independent decisions. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to identify problems and develop innovative solutions.
Proven ability to conduct radiolabeling procedures that produce radiopharmaceuticals.
Experience in chemical modification of macromolecules.
Demonstrated experience in high-performance liquid chromatography.
Experience in instant thin layer chromatography and radioactivity scanning

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with handling of radioisotopes for radiochemistry experiments.
Experience in the operation of gamma counter and LIGAND software program.
Demonstrated use of radiological modalities.
