The Panama-Buena Vista Union School District announces an opening for two (2) or more Academic Coach postions. The Academic Coach will be under the general direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services and the direct supervision of the site principal.
DESCRIPTION
The Academic Coach will build the capacity of teachers to meet the learning needs of all students. The Academic Coach will provide professional development, observation, coaching, and feedback for teachers to improve their content knowledge and effective delivery of instruction. The Academic Coach will provide support to the principal and school staff in data analysis, serve as a SST Coordinator, and assist with the implementation of intervention activities.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist in the implementation of a three-tiered model of instruction and intervention and provide support for socio-economically disadvantaged students, English learners, and foster youth.
Observe instruction by teachers and instructional intervention aides and provide feedback and coaching.
Assist grade level and/or subject area teams with the administration of assessments, data analysis, forming intervention groups, and planning instruction/intervention.
Provide professional development and modeling of effective instruction and intervention.
Provide training for new teachers and support services for teachers participating in District Induction programs.
Model instruction in reading or math to individuals or small groups of students.
Assist in the implementation and monitoring of programs at the school site.
Coordinate parent education activities that directly relate to student performance.
Maintain and monitor time schedules and documentation of provided services.
Provide support and coaching for teachers, which may include meeting with teachers beyond the teacher’s scheduled workday.
Attend meetings and trainings and keep current with applicable state guidelines.
Complete the following courses prior to applying for the position or within the first 2 years serving as an Academic Coach:
Cognitive Coaching
Defining Mastery
Data Analysis & Assessment
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must hold appropriate California Teaching Credential with English Learner Authorization; Administrative Services Credential or Master’s Degree desirable.
At least five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience, preferably at more than one grade level; must meet ESSA teacher qualification requirements.
Strong understanding of reading development, mathematical concepts, effective instructional strategies, classroom management techniques, and the needs of socio-economically disadvantaged students, English learners, and foster youth. Reading authorization is desirable.
Must have current knowledge of Common Core State Standards, online assessment, state frameworks, age-appropriate curriculum, lesson design, district curriculum maps, and classroom technology.
Appearance, grooming, and personality that establishes a desirable model. Better than average recommendations from professionals who have observed personal characteristics, scholastic attainment, and classroom performance. Must be able to establish good working relationships with other professionals.
SALARY AND TERMS OF SERVICE
Salary according to placement on the Academic Coach salary schedule. The Academic Coach will work 186 days. Academic Coaches will have the opportunity to serve as a mentor to no more than two (2) induction candidates for additional compensation. Position to be renewed annually contingent upon availability of program funds. The District currently contributes $19,793 per year to family dental, medical, and vision insurance plans and a life insurance plan for employees only.

SPECIAL NOTES
If selected, the Academic Coach will be expected to participate in summer training activities, which may occur during the instructional day and/or after school. Additional compensation will be provided, if applicable.
Following the interview process, well qualified applicants will then become part of a candidate pool and will be considered for appointment to academic coach openings, which become available for the 2022-23 school year.
Job responsibilities will begin with the start of the 2022-23 school year.
An additional categorically-funded Academic Coach position may be established at Title I Schools. The second Academic Coach may have a greater focus on the Secondary Duties and Responsibilities of the job description or both Coaches may mutually share job responsibilities.
The role of the Academic Coach is separate and apart from the evaluative role of the principal or supervisor of the teacher. The Coach advocates for, facilitates, and supports the work of the teacher, but never performs supervision or evaluation. The Coach should never confuse providing teachers with consultative feedback requiring professional judgment with the supervisory or evaluative responsibilities of the principal.
