POSITION DETAILS
For over 15 years, the CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) has been leading online education in New York. Notable for offering the most online bachelor’s and master’s degree options at the City University of New York, and for serving transfer students as the University system’s only undergraduate all-transfer college, CUNY SPS meets the needs of adults who wish to finish a bachelor’s degree, progress from an associate’s degree, earn a master’s degree or certificate in a specialized field, and advance in the workplace or change careers.
The School’s growth has been remarkable, with twenty-four degrees launched since 2006. Enrollment has risen by more than 30% in the last four years to over 4,000 students in the credit-bearing programs. Thousands more are enrolled in non-degree and grant-funded workplace learning programs. In addition, the School has an active alumni network and has established the CUNY SPS Foundation, which offers multiple scholarship opportunities to current students.
CUNY SPS has consistently been named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the country’s top online institutions. This year, the School was ranked #10 in the nation on the publisher’s list of the 2022 Best Online Bachelor’s Degree Programs.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Admissions Access Programs & SEEK, the Academic SEEK Student Support Specialist willsupport the enrollment, retention and graduation of studentsin the Percy Ellis Sutton/ Search for Education Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK)program through comprehensive student support services with an emphasis on financial education and connection to public benefits and services.
In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Practice proactive and data-driven outreach that provides timely and holistic interventions to address the barriers that prevent students from completing their degree and collaborate with offices across the school (e.g. Registrar, Financial Aid, Bursar, Career Services, Student Services, Academic Advisement) to assist student in resolving issues and navigating support.
Integrate financial planning into the student experience with the goal of supporting a successful and affordable student experience from admission to graduation.
Contribute to the development, implementation, and coordination of all SEEK programming, including but not limited, to new student orientation and onboarding activities.
Participate in evaluating the effectiveness of all SEEK programming and make recommendations for changes, as necessary.
Collaborate with the offices of academic advisement and financial aid to assist students with developing and executing educational plans from admission to graduation.
Provide information regarding all CUNY and CUNY SPS policies and procedures that impact enrollment and the student experience.
Develop and implement financial education initiatives and programming research and help students apply for public benefits and services.
Monitor the submission of student financial aid applications.
Refer students and facilitate the connection to appropriate campus resources, counseling, support services, and/or designated outside agencies; provide support to the SEEK admissions process.
Assist with departmental activities as needed and participate in School-wide events.

Note:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work in the office.

QUALIFICATIONS
A Master’s degree in counseling, social work, or psychology and two years’ related experience. Other related master’s degrees can be considered.
Note: this is not a mental health counselor/practitioner position and is not responsible for providing psychological counseling.
The ideal candidate will have:

At least two years of experience working in programs that serve socio-economically disadvantaged students.
Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to diversity, inclusion, and equity-minded policies, programs, and practices.
Experience with developing financial planning programming.
Experience working with nontraditional and transfer students.
Ability to build rapport and maintain positive, professional relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
Demonstrated ability to plan and execute successful student programming.
Evidence of proactive problem solving and follow-up to resolve student issues.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Ability to work well in a time-sensitive, dynamic, student-centered and responsive office.
Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as needed.

CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Provides educational programs, academic advice, and assistance to SEEK students. SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge) is a higher education opportunity program established at the senior CUNY colleges to provide comprehensive academic support to assist capable students who otherwise might not be able to attend college.

Provides advice to students covering academic, social, career, and related issues, making appropriate referrals as needed
Determines areas of need and develops and teaches orientation programs, seminars, student workshops, and other activities
Develops academic interventions related to student academic status and success
Reports on activities and outcomes, assisting with report-writing and data collection
Collaborates with academic and student support departments to ensure students are utilizing available services and programming
Performs related duties as assigned.

Salary commensurate with education and experience up to $63,382.
