Research Associate and Scientist positions
The New York Structural Biology Center (NYSBC) seeks an electron microscopist to join the staff of the Simons Electron Microscopy Center (SEMC) (semc.nysbc.org). The facilities include 12 transmission electron microscopes (with seven Titan Krios and two Glacios instruments) and two dual-beam scanning electron microscopes each equipped with a cryo stage. This individual will primarily be a cryoEM specialist who will assist users of the facility to carry out service experiments and will also have opportunities to pursue collaborative research projects. The individual should be capable of multitasking, should enjoy working with other people, and should have a good working knowledge of electron microscopes and a strong research background. Good communication skills are essential. Salary commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities include:
Operating and maintaining cryoEM and related instrumentation.
Training facility users in cryoEM technology.
Providing logistical support for day-to-day operations for users of the center.
Providing consultation to users on data and results obtained at the center.
Required qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in science required plus 3-5 years of cryoEM experience, OR Master’s degree in science and 1-2 years of cryoEM experience, OR PhD with cryoEM as the focus of thesis research.
Firm understanding of the principles of transmission electron microscopy and demonstrated skill and experience in the operation of cryo-electron microscopes.
Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) are needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment such as the ability to read, write, comprehend, and discuss research materials.
Preferred qualifications:
Degree in structural biology, biophysics, biochemistry, computer science, engineering, or closely related field.
Familiarity with biological structures at some level.
Ability to contribute to experimental design and assist with the analysis and interpretation of results
Proven organizational and time management skills to successfully set priorities meet established deadlines and recognize new problems.
Hands-on experience in maintenance and alignment of electron microscopes.
Experience with macromolecular model building in cryoEM density maps.
Experience in working in a Linux/UNIX environment and with cluster computing.
