Position Summary:
The NBA Foundation’s mission is to drive economic opportunity in the Black community through employment and career development by funding programs that generate successful transitions from school to meaningful employment for Black youth.
The NBA Foundation will accomplish this mandate by investing in local and national organizations that promote school-to-career employment opportunities including job readiness, skill training, job placement, and career advancement that target Black youth, ages 14-24 years old, with priority being given to organizations operating in NBA markets.
We are actively seeking a Program and Grants Manager/Officer to support the grantmaking of the first-ever NBA Foundation, a public 501(c)(3) charity, dedicated to creating greater economic empowerment in the Black community!
We are looking for someone who can manage a large national grants portfolio as a key member of the Program and Grants Team to ensure that grantmaking processes are efficient, transparent, and aligned with both the NBA Foundation’s mission and values as well as industry best practices.
The Program and Grants Manager will play a key role guiding the grantmaking of the foundation. The Program and Grants Manager must be extremely organized and foster good working relationships, both internally and externally. The Program and Grants Manager/Officer will report to the head of the Program and Grants Team.
The position will be based at the NBA offices in New York City per appropriate Covid-19 Protocols.
Major Responsibility:
Monitor and implement grantmaking activities, policies, and procedures.
Build grant proposals that adhere to the overall mission and follow funding guidelines.
Research new funding opportunities (in partnership with the Program and Grants Team) that are available in local, regional, and national markets.
Lead a rolling grant application review process advising on and performing a continued assessment of funding and pacing to share out on all transactions.
Review grant applications for completeness and adherence to IRS requirements and internal grantmaking guidelines.
Facilitate grantee check-ins, mid-year reporting calls, and prospective grantee calls Is responsible for compliance-oriented reviews of budgets, activations, financial statements, and progress reports along with other key components of the grant due diligence process.
Work with the Grants Associate to ensure the accuracy of grants data.
Generates and prepares data for monthly reports, and portfolio analyses.
Supports planning and preparations for virtual workshops and trainings, including grantee learning community meetings, grantee, and NBA market site visits, working sessions, and other key meetings with external and internal partners
Partner with key parties to ensure proper governance and internal control with financial audits.
Support engagement around philanthropic endeavors with nonprofit organizations, NBA teams, players, legends, and the media in NBA markets and communities across the United States and Canada.
Develop and cultivate positive relationships with NBA teams to support local grantmaking and programming efforts in team markets and collaborate with partners including NBA staff, NBA team staff, players, legends, coaches, donors, and executive leadership within public organizations.
Performs any other duties or tasks as assigned or required within grantmaking cycles
Required Skills/Knowledge:
Deep commitment to the mission and values of the NBA Foundation
5-7 years of experience working in non-profits, philanthropic organizations, or government Interest in a career in philanthropy, non-profits, public service, and or Social Responsibility
Experience with full cycle grantmaking, grants management and program design
Deep understanding of non-profit structure, due diligence processes and IRS financial reporting requirements
Desire and experience strengthening youth programming specifically Workforce Development, access to Higher Education, Mentoring and or Entrepreneurship
Knowledge and commitment to best practices in Social Justice, equitable, inclusive, and community-centered grantmaking
Demonstrated ability to lead large-scale projects, data management, financial planning, and auditing and/or strategic operations
Ability to collaborate with boards of charitable organizations and leadership
Experience working with database management systems and comfortable with applying financial analysis and performance/operation metrics
Experience in providing training and technical assistance when troubleshooting. Innovator and values-driven leader committed to the long-term success of the grantees
Extremely detail-oriented with strong analytical, interpersonal, writing, and communication skills
Skilled at cross-departmental collaboration and able to work in a dynamic, global and fast-paced environment
Thrive in a team that values transparency, collaboration, and integrity
Team player with the ability and willingness to and help other team members as needed
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) applications.
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree Preferred
