We seek candidates with broad experience and capabilities related to communications planning and content creation who share that commitment.
Reporting to the Chief Media and Executive Communications Officer, the Assistant Director of Communications, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, provides communications support around issues of equity, diversity and inclusion within UCLA Strategic Communications, with a particular focus on writing about EDI efforts on campus for internal as well as external audiences. The Assistant Director of Communications, EDI researches, drafts and writes written pieces include but are not limited to articles, internal messages, news releases, and other content for UCLA websites; develops communications plans around key initiatives and pride points for the university related to EDI efforts and issues, working in tandem with other key colleagues in Strategic Communications teams in media relations, UCLA Media, social media, executive communications and beyond.
While writing is a core skill for this position, we also value storytelling skills across platforms including but not limited to podcasts, in-person events, social media and marketing campaigns, and bold new ways of engaging with audiences, such as through photo essays, infographics or interactive tools.
This position will also serve on Strategic Communications’ EDI Council, which advises on a variety of communications matters.
The incumbent coordinates with other communications professionals and certain leadership throughout the organization; possesses a clear understanding of university priorities, particularly as they relate to equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to work in a large, complex organization. Duties are performed onsite during normal office working hours. Working hours may include weekends, evenings and holidays and may require light travel.

Required/Preferred
1. Minimum of 5 years full-time professional experience in news media or public relations, preferably in work related to higher education.

2. Demonstrated outstanding reporting and writing skills and ability to think strategically about communications.

3. Detailed knowledge and understanding of issues and communications relevant to equity, diversity and inclusion, particularly within a large and complex organization.
