GENERAL DUTIES
I.T. Assistants perform entry-level professional work in technology-related disciplines. While areas of specialization vary, typically I.T. Assistants work in areas such as development/programming, communications, technical support, or similar based on the needs of the Information Technology area to which they report. Work tasks include resolving minor technology problems, monitoring activities, and maintaining documentation. They have latitude for independent initiative and judgment, under supervision.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The Office of Computer Information Services (OCIS) at New York City College of Technology (City Tech) invites applications for the position of IT Assistant Level 3 (Telecommunications).
The IT Assistant Level 3 will be expected to provide day-to-day technical support for data network infrastructure supporting voice, data video conferencing, unified communications, and collaboration systems for the campus community.
Reporting to the Deputy Director, the IT Assistant Level 3 will be responsible for the following:

Install, maintain and service a variety of telephone equipment. Install voice and data communication circuits.
Install, configure and support new hardware and software infrastructure for VoIP and PBX systems (Siemans and Cisco).
Install, move, repair, and modify telecommunications and related equipment according to job order specifications, standards, and procedures.
Repair voice and data equipment, determining cable, wire and equipment needed to accomplish the service requested, installing circuits, cross-connects, equipment, etc,
Interface with off-campus telecommunications vendors as needed to acquire and implement software upgrades and equipment maintenance. May oversee vendor contract compliance.
Set up mobile phones and configure for campus applications, including email and security
Maintain inventory and stock, recommend purchase of both technical and nontechnical supplies, and take responsibility for tools and test equipment.
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts
Regularly evaluate systems’ signal strength and performance level to identify areas where improvement is needed
Under supervision, respond to user feedback and stay current with their requirements to better serve the needs of campus community
Troubleshoot, and provide solutions to, problems related specifically to Cisco VoIP systems, including programming and networking
Provide supervision to Telecommunications team members as needed
Provide reports and status updates to IT managers and CIO

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent

A minimum of six months of full-time experience in a computer or technology-related position. Experience that is more than 20 hours per week and less than 35 hours per week may be counted at 50% of the requirement (i.e., two months of part time experience equal to one month full time experience)

Additional experience and/or education that can be met by ONE of the following: An additional three years and six months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; an Associate’s degree plus 18 months of full-time work experience in a computer or technology-related position; or a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution

Demonstrated English Language proficiency

A Motor Vehicle Driver’s license, valid in New York State, may be required for some, but not all positions.

This title has three levels. To qualify for Levels 2 and 3, additional qualifications, such as education, experience, or certification relevant to the area of specialization are required.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Qualifications include:

Experience with network monitoring tools
Experience configuring network devices
Experience installing cabling and access control devices
Exposure to any combination of the following: Cisco UCCX; Cisco VoIP; Cisco Agent Desktop; UCS servers; CUCM; Unity Connection; SIP Gateways; Cisco-based routing; switching; wireless and ACE cluster environment
Stays up-to-date with industry innovations, best practices, and resources by consulting technical publications.

Additional Recommended Proficiencies:

Communication system analysis, troubleshooting and repairs skills
Foundational ability to troubleshoot network issues
Familiarity with twisted pair, fiber and coax installation methods and color-coding conventions
Knowledge of theories and techniques involved in the implementation and maintenance of Cisco telecommunications networks and equipment
Ability to climb ladders, lift materials weighing up to 20-30 lbs., work on ceilings, and regularly use small hand tools and testing equipment

COMPENSATION
New Hire: $64,635*
Incumbent: $73,034

This amount reflects a 13% salary suppression in effect for the first 24 months of employment only.
