Job Summary
Under general supervision, is responsible for performing regular inspection of City-owned property and taking necessary action to prevent or control insect and rodent activity. Works with crew in draining standing water from public property and spraying insecticides and pesticides. Working conditions are inside and outside with frequent exposure to hazardous materials, infectious diseases and unfavorable fumes, vapors and odors and occasional exposure to temperature variations, damp/wet surfaces, flammable liquids, high noise areas, insects, insect bites, dust, and bodily fluids. Exercises no supervision. The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Employees in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per SAMHD Policy DM13.2 (Download PDF reader). Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy. Work Location Brooks City Base, 2509 Kennedy Circle, Bldg. 125, 1st floor (78235) Work Hours 7:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday; occasional weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays
Essential Job Functions
Operates, cares for and maintains assigned trucks and equipment.
Makes emergency calls when requested during off duty hours (24 hour call).
Traps live rats, birds and mosquitoes for use in laboratory testing for detection of communicable diseases.
Sprays insecticides and pesticides.
Acts as representative between the department and the general public, answering questions or alleviating problems concerning environmental sanitation.
Inspects public property, drains standing water or sprays with chemicals for mosquito control.
Maintains and operates vehicle and spraying equipment, frequently lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Conducts neighborhood vector and rodent surveys.
Prepares written daily reports.
Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional accrediting agency).
One (1) year of experience in labor or maintenance work.
This position requires a valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License OR valid driver’s license from another state with the ability to obtain a valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Use of your own personal vehicle may at time be required and proof of Liability Insurance will be required.
Preferred Qualifications
Pest Control Licenses to include Agricultural and Structural.
One year of experience in pest control work.

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.
Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of insect and rodent control procedures and techniques.
Knowledge of chemicals, baits and traps used in insect and rodent control.
Knowledge of safety procedures and techniques used in handling and applying vector and rodent control chemicals and baits.
Knowledge of City streets.
Knowledge of vector control tools and equipment.
Skill in utilizing basic office equipment.
Ability to operate a small to medium size truck.
Ability to operate vector control equipment.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
Ability to interpret chemical mixing and application instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the public.
Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
