Job Description
The VISIONS Pre-College Program (Saturday July 9th – Friday August 5th) was developed specifically to meet the needs of students who are blind who are considering attending college after they graduate high school. The program addresses the educational, social, recreational, mobility and residential aspects of the college experience. The program is also designed to assist in making a determination as to the readiness and potential success of the participants as college enrollees. The students take an Intro to College Life course, as well as a distance learning writing course. Workshops related to college life and weekend excursions are offered to build social skills.
The Program Assistant works under the supervision of the Program Director and the Assistant Director to aid with providing programming for the legally blind youth participants. Program Assistants primarily work during social/recreational activities and help with the facilitation of educational/rehabilitation focused activities. The Program Assistant serves as a primary source of empowerment and guidance throughout the Pre-college life experience for the legally blind youth participants. The Program Assistant also plays an important role in the quality of the dorm life experience for the participants.
Staff Training is Thursday July 7th and Friday July 8th.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Effectively communicate and operate as a team with the program administration, Orientation Mobility/ VISIONS Rehabilitation Specialist, Program Assistants, Technology Specialist, Academic Specialist, and Manhattanville staff
Serve as a mentor to students at all times providing empowerment for self-esteem, guidance for social and academic adjustment, and motivation for stepping out of their comfort zone and increasing self-awareness
Create and facilitate weekly evening activities for cultivating a dorm life environment of inclusion, socialization, and excitement
Meet weekly with other Program Assistants for planning events/ activities in advance and report to the Program Director and Office/ Program Assistant supplies needed such as DVDs, food, decorations, room reservations, etc.
As needed, provide support to students who are completing homework assignments and laundry
Assist the Program Director and Assistant Director with tasks concerning the needs of the students and the program
Report to the Program Director and Academic Specialist and Technology Specialist any observations regarding the students academic and I-Pad performance
Enforce campus’ and program’s policies, rules, and procedures to students and parents and report to the Program Director any disorderly conduct of the students and any concerns of the students parents
Oversee the dorm maintenance of the students rooms, suite areas, and common-living area; provide students with assistance for maintaining the cleanliness of these areas as instructed by the Orientation Mobility/ VISIONS Rehabilitation Specialist and report to the Specialist and Program Director all challenges and progress experienced by the students and their ability to perform independently
Monitor the safety of the students on and off campus, support students during trips, encourage participation, and keep watch of students at all times when off campus
Respond immediately to emergency situations, contact campus safety, report any accidents/ injuries/ incidents to the Pre-College Director and the Office/ Program Assistant and write an incident report
Carry and unpack deliveries of program furniture and supplies: garbage bins, shower curtains, lamps, beanbags, mini refrigerators, microwaves, etc
Help with the setup of communal living quarters: laying out furniture, refilling snack bins, and reminding students to maintain its cleanliness
Aid the Program Director in the preparation, setup, and facilitation of the end of program graduation
Assist with the repacking/ boxing and logging of program furniture and supplies to be shipped out for storage upon the end of the program
Note progress and challenges experienced by participants as well as changes in student’s visual, physical, cognitive and/or emotional functioning and report this information to the Program Director
Treat everyone with appropriate dignity and respect and Encourage respect, sensitivity and understanding for individuals and their differences
Actively work to create an atmosphere in which residents understand the value of these community life requirements and accept responsibility for their own actions
Minimum Qualifications Current college student or recent graduate. Majoring in the human services field is a plus, but not required.*
Computer literate in Microsoft Office, the Google Suite, email communications, and internet research on PC and Apple iOS devices.
Desire and ability to work with teens who are blind or visually impaired
Willingness to work evening and weekend hours in a residential setting for four weeks.
Ability to accept guidance and supervision
Good character, integrity, adaptability, enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
At least 21 years of age

Pay: $2,400.00 – $2,600.00 per month
