AmeriCorps Youth Success Mentor – Service Term Opportunity (6 Months)

AmeriCorps Service as a Youth Success Mentor, through St Nicks Alliance, is an opportunity to work directly with youth and young adults during some of the most transformative moments in their lives. St. Nicks Alliance, a not-for-profit organization, established in 1994, runs many programs that impact the lives of North Brooklyn residents through education, employment, housing, and healthcare. In partnership with schools and communities, St. Nicks Alliance’s holistic approach to transformation combines youth development, academic enrichment, workforce readiness, health and wellness, arts learning, and post-secondary readiness.
As Youth Success Mentors SNA AmeriCorps Members will play a pivotal role in the lives of disadvantaged youth, ages 14-24, by helping them complete high school as well as transition into the workforce or college with the necessary skills to thrive. St Nicks Alliance’s AmeriCorps Members will collectively manage a cohort of over 500 youth who are preparing to graduate high school, have recently graduated, or are reconnecting to their formal education or the workforce.
AmeriCorps is a service term opportunity that is focused on the good of acts of Community Service and is funded in part by grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). It offers a living allowance, healthcare, education awards, and other benefits (see below) and is perfect for gap-year students and professional development experience. AmeriCorps Members will serve as positive role models for the students, while providing ongoing guidance and mentorship.
AmeriCorps Service Members key responsibilities are:
Assisting high-school aged students in Summer Youth Employment Programs (SYEP) by co-facilitating and providing programmatic support.
Leading students to make a successful transition after high school by offering opportunities and additional support.
Work with high-school youth to establish and make progress toward fulfilling their post-secondary goals.
Contact and engage students and alumni in person, by telephone, and through virtual platforms in a courteous, professional, and friendly manner.
Monitor and track weekly and monthly attendance of that year’s graduating cohort, and follow up with them to ensure they are following their individual career plan.
Recruit graduate cohort with assistance from Site Supervisor, through daily phone calls, emails, letters to the home, and social media connections.
Help plan and implement alumni activities, events, and projects that engage the graduate cohort.
Research educational and employment opportunities and share with the graduating cohort, specifically in their communities.
Maintain general office policies and procedures, including document management.
Duties may include telephone calls, student record keeping, copying, faxing and filing.
Fulfill service hour requirements that add up to roughly 32-35 hours per week.
Qualifications:
Should be an open-minded and mature adult or young adult
Have the ability to work a full-time work week
Be a U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, or U.S. National
Have earned at least a High School diploma or GED
Must pass mandatory background checks and clearances
Be able to complete 900 service hours in a 6 month period
Have the ability to relate to students from a variety of backgrounds and abilities
Ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deliverable deadlines
Possess strong verbal and written communication skills
Must be comfortable using and participating on virtual platforms such as Zoom and Google Meets
Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a HUGE plus
AmeriCorps Service Member Benefits:
Living allowance of $623.08 paid bi-weekly (direct deposit)
Segal Education award in the amount of $3,274.50, upon successful completion of AmeriCorps service hours (valid for educational expenses, for up to 7 years)
Student loan forbearance for those who qualify
Health insurance coverage and Child Care assistance for those who qualify
