Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Four (4) years of full-time experience working in communications or public relations. Superior writing abilities with demonstrated experience writing feature stories or other written content that aligns with the strategic objectives of an organization.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Advanced degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Communications, Public Relations or Health-care related field. Additional years (5+) of extensive professional experience in communications or public relations. Significant public relations campaign management experience. Experience in public affairs, managing media relations, website, social media content and/or video production for higher education/non-profit organization. Experience with magazine and newsletter (paper/electronic) publications. Understanding of effective graphic design, branding principles and marketing. Experience with digital communications strategies and other new media for communications.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Communications Director will oversee external and internal communications for the School of Dental Medicine (SDM) with the aim of enhancing and optimizing the SDM’s visibility and reinforcing educational and research goals. Under this position, the incumbent will successfully build consensus among a large number of diverse colleagues, senior leadership, donors and outside agencies, and create a sense of community within the School, while serving as part of the Dean’s strategic planning team to promote the School’s philanthropic goals. This position will promote discoveries and creative work that will impact our society. Successful incumbent will have outstanding written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and provide an ambitious, visionary and creative approach to Communication and Advancement strategies and support the mission and activities of SDM.

The successful incumbent will have outstanding verbal and written communication and presentation skills with a service-oriented attitude. Experience maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive communications with discretion. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team in a dynamic environment. Proven design and creative direction experience. Experience multi-tasking in a fast-paced, dead-line driven environment, managing complex projects, and interacting with a culturally and ethnically diverse population. Experience promoting a work environment that encourages creativity, efficiency and receptivity to change. Experience building long-term relationships based on trust, predictability, and communication. Experience interacting with individuals at various levels within an institution as well as the general public.

Duties:

Administrative Advisor:

Plan and implement internal and external communication programs in support of the strategic direction of the School of Dental Medicine and the University that engage and advance the University’s position with relevant constituencies and targeted audiences. Develop and implement strategies for using and evaluating non-traditional media. Advise the Dean’s Office leadership and other units on opportunities related to image, marketing and branding, and high-level decision- making on communication policy issues.
Serve on the Dean’s executive team to implement the SDM strategic plan.

Media Relations:

Act as editorial director for the School of Dental Medicine website, brochures, newsletters, alumni magazine, social media channels, and all other communications materials. Oversee the design, research writing, editing, publishing, and distribution of print and web-based publications. Ensure that publications conform to University publishing policies, editorial style, organization and appropriateness. Ensure message continuity, design, and tone for digital and print publications. Help individual SDM departments in the above tasks as appropriate.

Communications:

Develop communications strategies and materials in support of the School’s strategic plan for external advancement and alumni relations. Translate School’s research and educational programs and strategic initiatives into marketing strategies to funding agencies and for donor, corporate, or foundation gifts.
Develop communications strategies in support of the School’s undergraduate and graduate student recruitment efforts, including international programs. Maintain an updated portfolio of faculty/alumni/student profiles and major research/ educational projects/initiatives.

Administrative Liaison:

Collaborate with faculty, staff, special event planners, student groups and others with problem resolution and provide support in creating, editing and formatting content. Advise the School’s departments on policies, practices, and modes of communications for disseminating information. Work closely with faculty and staff to promote news coverage of major research and educational accomplishment stories and announcements; organize and coordinate media opportunities.
Monitor the overall perception of the School and foster a positive public perception of the School through effective public relations that influence opinion and promote ideas. Create outreach and public engagement opportunities. Collaborate to find synergies between University-wide marketing and communications efforts and serve as chief School liaison with the University Communications office. Participate on University-wide committees and task forces to enhance visibility and reputation throughout the University and beyond. Increase the participation of underrepresented minorities in DDS degrees through better communicating our various initiatives in this area.

Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

Evening and weekend work will be required at times.

In accordance with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) regulation that all hospitals and nursing homes “continuously require all personnel to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19,” Candidates who are not already vaccinated must obtain the first dose of the vaccine within three (3) calendar days of acceptance of conditional job offer and must obtain any subsequent doses in accordance with the vaccine protocol. Candidates who are partially vaccinated, but not yet fully vaccinated, must complete their vaccination series within three (3) calendar days of job offer or in accordance with vaccine manufacture protocol, whichever comes later.

The regulation also includes those who may be affiliated with or interact with employees of a hospital or nursing home. The regulation allows for limited exemptions with reasonable accommodations, consistent with applicable law.
