National Grid is hiring a Permit Expeditor for our Complex Construction Department in Melville, NY. This position covers the Downstate NY Region with work zones from Staten Island to Montauk Point. At this time, the majority of the work is in the Brooklyn and Queens territory.

Job Purpose
The Permit Expeditor supports the Engineering, Complex Construction, Project Management & Development teams to identify project specific permit requirements & works directly with NYC DOT to negotiate permit stipulations for each project. Responsible for coordinating and maintaining NYC DOT permits for assigned Complex Construction projects as quickly & accurately as possible. You will Act as a Liaison for NYC DOT addressing summonses, understanding & communicating stipulations on permits. The Permit Expeditor is a Subject matter expert in NYC DOT rules, regulations, processes, and procedures.
In this position, you will attend regular weekly site visits at active construction sites. You will spend time reviewing the permit requirements for each job with the assigned Construction Supervisor & Contractors to promote work zone safety & ensure compliance.
Key Accountabilities
Maintain permits in Permit Database stored on SharePoint Excel file.
Educate Complex Construction Supervisors & Contractors on the job site. Assist them in understanding the permits & all stipulations associated with each permit to ensure compliance.
Coordinate & plan with Construction Supervisors, Construction Planner, the NY, SI, LI Hubs, Engineers, Project Managers, and Project Developers on requirements for NYC DOT permitting.
Reconcile summonses, CARs, any NOVs issued by NYC DOT.
Track NYC DOT related permitting documents, information, and databases for Complex Construction
Apply for new permits
Edit and create permit application sketches for new permits
Track permit applications & follow up as necessary for a timely release
Communicate upcoming work embargoes & moratoriums to the team
Attend external NYC DOT meetings such as borough resurfacing, HIQA, or project specific on-site meetings.
Attend internal departmental, organizational, project related meetings & weekly field visits
Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
Excellent leadership, influencing/negotiating, customer orientation and communication skills.
Ability to support /communicate and effectively.
develop working relationships with staff at all levels.
Qualifications
Associates or Bachelor’s degree preferred
5+ Years of supervisory or project management related experience required
Basic knowledge of construction, utilities, or gas operations preferred
An organized individual with strong interpersonal & communication skills who has the ability to manage competing deadlines & priorities effectively.
Demonstrates a high level of personal initiative and the ability to interact with company personnel, contractors, regulatory representatives, and town/city officials in a positive collaborative manner.
Able to build & maintain strong relationships with all internal and external stakeholders.
Communicate clearly and effectively verbally & in writing, including preparing and delivering presentations
Strong negotiation skills
Critical thinking & problem-solving skills. Ability to develop strategies to continuously improve the permit planning process.
Skilled in data management & the ability to work with data to organize, interpret, and communicate analysis
Driving in our New York State territories is required, including New York City.
Valid driver’s license with a safe driving history is required.
